On Days 3 and 4 of our South Carolina Bike and Boat Tour we get to explore the wonderful town of Beaufort. The flat Lowcountry terrain is ideal for exploring by bike. But there will be fun had by other modes of transport as well!
Historic Tour
We will get to take a step back in time and enjoy the history of Beaufort on a private horse-drawn carriage. Ride past the stunning antebellum mansions of Beaufort’s National Landmark District, learning about the city’s history, from Revolutionary times to modern-day movie making (including The Big Chill, The Prince of Tides, and Forrest Gump). After experiencing the town’s romantic ambiance, quiet dignity, and incredible architecture, you’ll soon understand why the readers of Southern Living magazine rated Beaufort as the “Best Small Southern Town.”
Dinner & Cocktails
After our ride through the past we will enjoy a cocktail on the Inn’s huge wraparound porch. After relaxing a bit we will move to a porch with a “river view” to be treated to a privately catered dinner in the cool evening air.
More Cycling Fun
Morning will set us back out on our bikes. Our journey will take us through the historic downtown area, as well as cycling the entire length of the Spanish Moss Trail, before ending back at the Inn. In January 2011, a surface easement was granted to Beaufort County to develop 14 miles of the corridor as a recreational trail – called the Spanish Moss Trail. Since 2013, nearly 10 miles of the Trail have been developed and are open to many who use it each day, connecting the City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal.
OUTSIDE MAGAZINE
Names Spanish Moss Trail as Top 10 Urban Walking Trails in the U.S.
“What a huge accolade for the Spanish Moss Trail to be named among the Top 10 Urban Walking Trails in the country in Outside Magazine – in the company of Trails in New York City, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago! We are excited that our wonderful Trail is receiving national recognition. It truly is one of the best trails and we hope you are getting out there to enjoy it!”
Guided Kayaking – ACE Basin
After the morning ride, and refueling for the next part of our day, we will head out to the ACE Basin. ACE Basin stands for the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto Rivers, which form the estuary and parts of the Refuge boundary. The entire basin encompasses more than 350,000 acres, of which the Refuge comprises just less than 12,000 acres. No bikes will be needed for this part of our tour, now it is time for some boating! You will be treated to a two hour guided tour through one of the most unique ecosystems in the USA. You may see dolphins, bald eagles, endangered Wood Storks and a large variety of other wildlife that call this area home. Your guide will share some of the 400 years of history while you leisurely paddle though this protected place.
So there is your peek at just a small portion of what you will be able to experience on our 6 day South Carolina Bike and Boat Tour. Our active vacations will leave you with a lifetime of memories.
