Menemsha, Chilmark
Menemsha is located on the western side Chilmark, along its border with the town of Aquinnah, though Menemsha is technically part of the town of Chilmark,but has it’s special and a very unique feel. Stroll along along the narrow roads; enjoy beautiful water views from nearly everywhere of the Menemsha Basin. While in Menemsha be sure to spend some quiet time strolling along peaceful Menemsha Beach. The beach enjoy a short walk out onto the jetty to watch the fishing boats unloading their catch of the day. This location is one of the many where scenes from the movie Jaws were filmed in Menemsha. Bring your camera as this place is perfect for taking some amazing photos!
Enjoy a walk down Basin Street to the well-known Swordfish Sculpture that was commissioned by the town of Chilmark in 1994. Located on the east side of the beach parking lot, this bronze sculpture is impressive to stand beneath.
Coast Guard History
The Coast Guard station sits majestically on a hill overlooking the village of little shops, quaint houses, and fishing docks. This facility is home to the unit is classified as a Heavy Weather Station, capable of operating in up to 20 foot seas and 50 knots wind. Previously known as the United States Life-Saving Service (a forerunner to the Coast Guard) established a station at Gay Head in 1895. After 43 the Coast Guard station located at Cuttyhunk was moved by barge to Menemsha, replacing the Gay Head station. This Coast Guard station has been in Menemsha since 1952 when it was moved from Cuttyhunk.
