Great Bike Tours is not offering tours Cycling the Franconia Notch Recreational Trail. The Franconia Notch Recreational Trail is a paved designated bike trail that winds through the 800,000 acre White Mountains National Forest. This trail covers approximately 9 miles each way and there are some moderately challenging hills to climb as well as descend. Traveling from South to North will offer a more challenging route with more uphill climbs and there are many mountain views and bridges/river crossings along the way.
The best way to experience the mountains
Some of the sites you will see along the ride, include the Basin (a deep glacial pothole with a trail that you may want to explore leading to some very unique rock formations and cascades) and the famous Old Man of the Mountain viewed just a short walk from the path at Profiler Plaza– also known as the Great Stone Face or the Profile, was a series of five granite cliff ledges on Cannon Mountain. The first recorded mention of the Old Man was in 1805. It collapsed on May 3, 2003.
The Franconia Notch Recreational Trail ends at Flume Gorge & Visitor’s Center, where you can stretch and enjoy a loop hike (1¼ hours) that includes an 800-ft long gorge, spectacular waterfalls, glacial boulders, caves, and historic covered bridges.
When Cycling the Franconia Notch Recreational Trail, this is a great place to stop for a picnic lunch to refuel for the rest of your days adventures. If you are cycling with Great Bike Tours our next ride will be along one of the most scenic cycle routes in America, the Kancamagus National Scenic Byway (You can cycle up the 12 mile mountain or enjoy our shuttle to the top and enjoy the mostly 23 mile downhill ride.
